A 22-year-old student was died after she fell while climbing her university’s bell tower to take photos at the top.
According to The New York Post reports, Journalism major Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, of Portland, Ore., was taking part in what has become a rite of passage for seniors at the elite Bronx school — scaling the Keating Hall clock tower, touching its bell and taking photos outside one of its top windows.
According to The New York Daily News, Monfries tripped on a landing while walking up the stairs “inside the Keating Hall clock tower with a group of fellow seniors.”
She fell 40 feet “through an opening in the stairs around 3:15 a.m.,” Daily News reported. A university spokesman told Daily News the tower is normally locked but some students try to enter it for a better view of the city.
According to NBC New York, Monfries and other students “were climbing the stairs when the victim fell through a hole in one of the stairway landings.” The university is investigating how the students were able to access the tower.
A university spokesman said the tower was locked at all times and investigations were underway as to how the students gained access.
